Sleep disorders: classification
Sleep disturbances affect 30% of the adult population, mainly the elderly. There are different types of sleep disorders:
- Parasomnias are undesirable behavioral states that occur during or after sleep, as well as before falling asleep. The main symptoms include muscle cramps, nightmares, sleepwalking.
- Dyssomnias are pathological conditions that are characterized by a violation of the quality, quantity or duration of sleep. This category includes:
- circadian rhythm disorders (pathological disorders resulting from desynchronization between the external day/night cycle and human biorhythms);
- insomnia (change in the quality and duration of night rest);
- hypersomnia (excessive sleep duration);
- narcolepsy (uncontrolled bouts of daytime sleepiness);
- Disorders that are associated with the respiratory system (short-term cessation of breathing during sleep).
Various sleep disorders are prone to rapid progression. In advanced cases, they can provoke a violation of the functions of the internal systems of the body.
