Sleep disorders can occur in people of any age. It negatively affects the psychological and physical state of the body. The problem worsens with age and, if underestimated or self-medicated, it can affect performance and quality of life. At the first signs of sleep disturbance, you should seek medical help. The specialist will diagnose, determine the cause of the problem and prescribe treatment.

Sleep disorders: classification

Sleep disturbances affect 30% of the adult population, mainly the elderly. There are different types of sleep disorders:

  1. Parasomnias are undesirable behavioral states that occur during or after sleep, as well as before falling asleep. The main symptoms include muscle cramps, nightmares, sleepwalking.
  2. Dyssomnias are pathological conditions that are characterized by a violation of the quality, quantity or duration of sleep. This category includes:
  • circadian rhythm disorders (pathological disorders resulting from desynchronization between the external day/night cycle and human biorhythms);
  • insomnia (change in the quality and duration of night rest);
  • hypersomnia (excessive sleep duration);
  • narcolepsy (uncontrolled bouts of daytime sleepiness);
  • Disorders that are associated with the respiratory system (short-term cessation of breathing during sleep).

Various sleep disorders are prone to rapid progression. In advanced cases, they can provoke a violation of the functions of the internal systems of the body.

Sleep disturbance: causes

Narcolepsy, insomnia, hypersomnia and other pathologies can be triggered by various reasons:

  1. Mental diseases – depression, dementia, neuroses, psychoses, anxiety disorders, psychoses, phobias.
  2. Medication taking. The active or auxiliary components of some drugs can cause increased arousal with subsequent sleep disturbance.
  3. Smoking, drinking alcohol, tonic drinks, drugs. Nicotine, coffee, narcotic substances are powerful stimulants that contribute to the overexcitation of the body and sleep disturbance. Alcohol in some cases helps to fall asleep faster, but can contribute to disruption of the deep sleep phase and frequent nighttime awakenings.
  4. Diseases of the internal organs. Reflux esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus), diabetes mellitus, thyrotoxicosis (high levels of thyroid hormones in the blood), bronchial asthma, arthritis, kidney failure, diseases of the cardiovascular system (congestive heart failure, myocardial ischemia, stroke).
  5. Chronic stress. Unresolved psychological trauma, constant life difficulties (problems at work, death of a loved one), overwork.
  6. Imbalance of hormones. In women during the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, during menopause, sleep disorders often occur due to changes in the concentration of hormones in the blood.
  7. Old age. In older people, sleep disturbance is most often caused by a large number of chronic diseases, a decrease in physical activity, medication, and depression.
  8. Poor sleep hygiene. Systematic shift of biorhythms, use of devices that emit a blue spectrum (smartphones, tablets, etc.), watching TV, increased physical activity before a night’s rest, late dinner.
  9. It is difficult to determine on your own why sleep is disturbed. With persistent sleep disorders, professional diagnosis is required to prescribe adequate treatment.

Sleep disturbance: symptoms

A key symptom of parasomnias and dyssomnias is a feeling of lack of sleep. Usually this condition occurs due to difficulty falling asleep or frequent nighttime awakenings. Sleep related symptoms include:

  • failure after waking up;
  • excessive sleepiness while awake;
  • mental discomfort;
  • decrease in physical and mental activity;
  • lack of concentration.
  • Parasomnias are often accompanied by enuresis, night terrors, epileptic seizures, sleepwalking. Sleep apnea (short-term cessation of breathing during sleep) is characterized by a feeling of suffocation during sleep, dryness in the throat, shortness of breath, chronic snoring, and signs of high blood pressure may also appear due to a violation of the respiratory rhythm. Due to persistent sleep disturbances, serious emotional disorders can develop. Depending on the cause of sleep disturbance and the individual characteristics of the body, the symptoms may vary.
