Valerian and alcohol: a dangerous combination

According to the State Expert Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, more than 45% of Ukrainians regularly take valerian supplements. Every third person has combined them with alcohol at least once, unaware of the serious consequences of such combination.

“Over the past year, the number of cases with complications from combined use of valerian and alcohol has increased by 34%,” notes Alina Gruzina, MD, psychiatrist-narcologist at “TRANSFORMATION” Medical Center. “It’s particularly concerning that people consider this combination safe.”

Statistics and Scale of the Problem

Research by the National Institute of Health of Ukraine shows:

  • 67% of valerian users don’t read the instructions
  • 42% combine it with alcohol
  • 28% increase dosage without consulting a doctor
Age Group Usage Frequency Percentage Combined with Alcohol
18-25 years 35% 48%
26-35 years 42% 39%
36-45 years 38% 45%
over 45 years 51% 27%

Why Do People Take Risks?

“The main problem is that people perceive valerian as completely safe,” explains Tatiana Gurenko, narcologist at TRANSFORMATION clinic. “Its natural origin creates a false sense of security.”

Interaction Mechanism and Consequences

“When valerian interacts with alcohol, the sedative effect increases 5-7 times,” comments Alexander Dzyaba, MD, anesthesiologist-resuscitator. “This can lead to serious suppression of respiratory and cardiovascular centers.”

Complications statistics (Ministry of Health data for 2023):

  • 23% of cases require emergency hospitalization
  • 18% lead to acute heart failure
  • 12% result in coma

Overdose Symptoms

Signs of dangerous interaction:

  • Sharp blood pressure drop
  • Coordination impairment
  • Mental confusion
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Loss of consciousness

“If any of these symptoms appear, immediate medical attention is required,” emphasizes Dr. Dzyaba. “Delay can be life-threatening.”

High-Risk Groups

Increased risk applies to:

  1. People with liver diseases (risk higher by 89%)
  2. Patients with cardiovascular diseases (risk higher by 76%)
  3. Individuals taking psychotropic medications (risk higher by 92%)
